The one in which you witness the arising of actions, feelings, needs, responses… with wonder and amazement.
I hope today is the best day of your life. The one in which you witness the arising of actions, feelings, needs, responses… with wonder and amazement. That you can say thank you to everything (especially to what you don’t like… and witness the increased space in your chest when you do… how there is just a bit more breath, a bit more vital energy).
When I was 11, our family moved from India to Jamaica… my father, had we stayed in India, was slotted to be in line to become the Surgeon General of the state (then Andhra Pradesh). But he chose to leave, to honor my mother’s desire to leave, and had to start again with the humblest position in the hospital. We were in a new culture… and I got to be in the choir at school, hymns with a Jamaican flair (I had never sung hymns before so I had no idea).
Then there was this incredible song I learned:
“when I in awesome wonder…consider all the worlds…I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder…then sings my soul”
I teared up then, and I still do.
No matter what, that incredible movie is always playing as we move through time. How …? I am reminded of a time we admitted a tiny patient… whom the new mother was taking home after extubation. She was hearing many things from many people but chose to follow her mother instinct to offer her baby a first and last look at home, held by mother. There is a huge inner landscape of grief that this baby and this mother open in all of us. The humbling wonder of the capacity to give birth and the capacity to let go.
Mary Oliver the poet says:
"To live in this world, you must be able to do three things: to love what is mortal; to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go."
May you love every mortal thing, time, feelings, sensations, needs, urges, tasks, people, trees, flowers, animals….that arise for your witness today. Thank you for being in my life. May today be the most bestest lovingest day ever. That is… until tomorrow
